The Red-Vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) and the Red-Whiskered Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus) are two delightful and commonly found birds in Mumbai, each with its own distinctive charm. The Red-Vented Bulbul is easily identified by the bright red patch beneath its tail, which gives it its name. These birds have a sooty black head, a white rump, and a sleek, black crest. They are active and vocal, often spotted in gardens, parks, and urban areas, where their lively presence and melodic calls add to the city’s soundscape. On the other hand, the Red-Whiskered Bulbul is known for the striking red patches on its cheeks, or “whiskers,” from which it derives its name. This species also sports a pointed black crest, along with white underparts and a red patch under its tail. Slightly more elusive than its red-vented cousin, the Red-Whiskered Bulbul is often seen in the quieter, greener areas of Mumbai, such as wooded parks and suburban gardens. While both species share similarities in size and behavior, their names reflect the unique red markings that distinguish them: the Red-Vented Bulbul for its red vent and the Red-Whiskered Bulbul for its red whiskers. Together, they add vibrant life and color to Mumbai’s urban and suburban environments.
